Sylvester Oromoni Death: ‘I Cannot Bury My Son Until I get Justice’ – Father - Naija News 247

A dormitory mate of the late 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, Sylvester Oromoni, has confirmed that he was tortured to death by his seniors.

In a series of WhatsApp messages to one Tamara, the dormitory mate said six and not five seniors attacked Oromoni.

The border, whose identity was hidden, said that both the Principal of the school and their Dorm Master, one Mr. Ahmed, were aware of the attack on the late student who turned 12 on December 4, 2021.

He said that Oromoni’s case was not the first of such in the school, adding that the previous ones had been covered up.

The border wrote, unedited:

Hello tamara

Sly got beat up on Saturday 27th of November by the boys that was named and the ring leader was Favor, Aslem and Micheal is more of a follower.

I was in the room the day they came in
Sly was on his bed and we were just talking and playing in our hostel room as usual after we clean. At about evening time the senior boys came in and senior Favor switched of the light they were holding their belt with them
They were not 5 but 6 senior boys but I don’t know who exactly was part of the beating but I know senior Edwin was there for sure.

They beat him up and he fell from his bunk and after they were done they called us back to the room and aslem said the school rules piss him off and if we snitch the way sly did them would do even worse to us. Sly was still on the ground and favor kicked his head again before they left.

In the morning on Sunday sly was on his bed and he complained that he couldn’t walk so the senior called us to their room and said if we snitch they would know and that if they ask us what is wrong we should say he played football.

The dorm master knew there was a beating that occurred so I don’t understand why they are lying on the internet that he wasn’t aware.

Even the following morning sly went to the sick bay and it was obvious he was beaten and because no football can break bones and moreover that week we didn’t have or play football or sport activities.

I tried to explain to the principal what happened but they keep shutting us up and saying he was playing football even before sly uncle came to pick him up me and me and my friend told our dorm master mr amed what really happened but they didn’t want to listen to us

I can’t sleep so I decided to speak the truth everything sly said before he died were the truth.

We didn’t know he was dead till we were sent home and picked by our parents
They told us he was getting withdraw from the school

This is not the first case that has happen in Dowen they always hid and cover it up the junior student are not always protected by the teachers or principal if we report annoymously they would make us suffer for reporting.

The 12-year-old student of the Lekki-based school died last November after he was allegedly attacked by five of his colleagues for refusing to join a cult group.

Oromoni’s father had claimed his child was beaten and fed a liquid chemical that eventually led to his death.

Dowen College, however, dismissed the claim, alleging that the boy sustained injuries while playing football with colleagues.

In a letter dated January 4, and to Femi Falana (SAN), counsel to the family of the deceased student, Mojisola Dada, the chief coroner of Lagos, said the inquest will be held at the magistrate court located at Epe district.

In the letter by Mikail Kadiri, coroner of Epe district, Falana was asked to forward a list of suspects and witnesses to be summoned to court for the judicial inquiry.

“I have the directive of the chief coroner of Lagos State, honourable justice M. A. Dada to remind you that the inquest into the death of Sylvester Oromoni will commence on Saturday, 15th January, 2022 at Magistrate Court No. 4, Epe district, combined high court and magistrate court of Lagos State, Epe at 9:00am prompt; the hearing shall be in open court,” the letter read.

“You are further reminded to file and serve depositions of all witnesses you intend to call at the inquest and forward a list of persons whom, in your opinion, needs to be summoned by the court.

“The depositions may be filed at any of the Magisterial Districts in Lagos State and served electronically on all parties concerned. Please find attached the name, firm/representation and phone numbers of parties that attended the preliminary meeting held on the 16th December, 2021. Thank you.”

Two autopsies were conducted on the deceased, one by the Delta police and the second by the force’s Lagos command.

The first autopsy earlier released to the public had revealed that the deceased died of “chemical intoxication”.

After a police probe, Hakeem Odumosu, Lagos police commissioner, said findings had been forwarded to the state’s department of public prosecution (DPP).

In the DPP’s advice released on Wednesday, it was stated that the police investigation and the two autopsies conducted on the body of the deceased student failed to establish a prima facie case against the suspects.

A Lagos magistrate court had also granted bail to the five students charged with the alleged murder of Oromoni.

The police also released a housemaster and other staff of the school, saying the court order to detain them had elapsed.
