According to a report from Sahara Reporters, A member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly was moved to tears after seeing thousands of his constituents living as refugees in the Niger Republic.
During a recent visit to an internally displaced persons’ camp in a neighbouring country, the lawmaker met his constituents in a deplorable state.
They were reportedly displaced in Nigeria by bandits and other insurgent activities. According to a UNHCR report from December 2020, the Boko Haram insurgency has displaced nearly 2.4 million people in the Lake Chad Basin.
According to information gathered by Naija News 247 from the report, there are approximately 304,562 Nigerian refugees, with over 2.1 million internally displaced people in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the UNHCR spokesperson, Babar Baloch, stated at a press conference at the Palais des Nations in Geneva that since April 2019, 25% of the refugees who fled relentless attacks by armed groups have come from Nigeria’s Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states.
Many of them, according to Baloch, have sought refuge in Maradi, Niger’s second-largest city. He stated that as a result of insecurity at Nigeria’s border region, an additional 19,000 Niger nationals have been displaced within their own country.
The official also expressed concern about the influx of refugees, “primarily desperate women and children, as a result of deteriorating security and attacks inside Nigeria’s Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states, as well as the risk of armed incursions spilling over into Niger.”
Seeing a prominent figure cry in public could just be proof that he cares for his people and he has them in his heart. We all know that many people have been rendered homeless in their hometowns as a result of insecurity.
Some people are having sleepless nights as a result of attacks by hoodlums and other unscrupulous elements.
