Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City on September 14, 1973 to African American parents. His father, Olu Dara (born Charles Jones III), is a jazz and blues musician from Mississippi. His mother, Fannie Ann was a U.S. Postal Service worker from North Carolina. He has a brother, Jabari Fret, who raps under the name Jungle and is a member of hip hop group Bravehearts. His father adopted the name “Olu Dara” from the Yoruba people. “Nasir” is an Arabic name meaning “helper and protector”, while “bin” means “son of” in Arabic.
As a young child, Nas and his family relocated to the Queensbridge Houses in the borough of Queens. His neighbor, Willy “Ill Will” Graham, influenced his interest in hip hop by playing him records. His parents divorced in 1985, and he dropped out of school after the eighth grade. He educated himself about African culture through the Five Percent Nation (a splinter group of the Nation of Islam) and the Nuwaubian Nation. In his early years, he played the trumpet and began writing his own rhymes.
Nas was very much involved in hip-hop music from his childhood time and released debut single, Halftime, in 1992. After much struggle, he released his debut album, Illmatic, in 1994.
The album got a very positive response from hip-hop lovers and rated as the best album of 1994 by The Source. In the meantime, Nas appeared as a guest performer in other artist’s albums. Nas second album, It Was Written, two singles, If I ruled the World and Street Dreams were too much appreciated. This album made the name of Nas in the main hip-hop industry.
Nas co-founded a group, The Firm, along with AZ, Foxy, and Nature, and released the album in 1997. The album didn’t live up to their expectations, and the group dissolved. Nas released his 3rd album, I Am… in April 1999. I Am… ranked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 music chart and sold 470,000 in its initial week. Nas fourth was a minor hit.
Stillmatic, Nas fifth album was released in 2001. Stillmatic debuted at number 5 on the United States Billboard 200 music chart. In 2002, Nas released his sixth career album, God’ Son, and the album peaked at number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. God’s Son single, I Can, proved to be Nas’s biggest hit.
On November 30, 2004, Nas released his seventh album Street’s Disciple, and the album received mix reviews. In the same year, he reconciles with Jay-Z, a rapper, after a long-running feud. In the following years, Nas come up with the release of another three albums and several collaborated projects.
On August 2021, Grammy-Award winning rap legend Nas revealed the tracklist for his new album, King’s Disease II, out this Friday, August 6 at midnight EST via Mass Appeal. The album features collaborations with Eminem, EPMD, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, YG, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Hit-Boy, and more.
NME called King’s Disease “a stately and royal return to form for rap’s original scholar.” Consequence of Sound also said of the album, “King’s Disease delivers a feel appropriate for the times and hits the mark as being one of the better rap albums of the year.”
