As part of day 33rd match of Premier League, Southampton (15th on EPL table before the match) welcomed Manchester City (2nd) at St Mary’s Stadium.
After the large victory (4-0) in the middle of the week on their lawn against Liverpool, the men of Pep Guardiola hoped to chain a third consecutive victory to take off on Leicester (3rd). However dominating throughout the game with notably 75% possession of the ball, the Citizens on 24 shots for only six on target did not manage to find the frame. They were even surprised at the start of the match against the course of the game, through Che Adams, author of a sumptuous goal almost at the level of the central circle which came to surprise an Ederson too advanced (16th).
Rarely led this season, the Skyblues reacted a few minutes later and demanded a penalty after a contentious foul on Bernardo Silva, to no avail. The current second in the classification multiplied the offensives but finally saw his shots repelled by a McCarthy of the big evenings, very happy to see the strike of Fernandinho finish on the left post (30th). A second period similar to the first but the Southampton Saints held firm and won on the lowest score (1-0). In the standings, Manchester City remains a strong dolphin and still has an eight point lead over Leicester. For its part, Southampton is breathing in and goes back to 13th place in the ranking.
