Joe Hart signed a three-year deal with the club while Ireland international McCarthy has agreed on a four-year contract.

Both players could be available for Thursday’s Europa League qualifier against FK Jablonec.

Speaking on the two signings, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou said: “I’m delighted that we have signed two top-class players in Joe and James.”

He also said: “Both of them have a wealth of experience at both club and international level, and that is something which can only benefit the squad, and I’m looking forward to working with both of them.” Postecoglou has repeatedly called for reinforcements after a difficult start to his Celtic tenure.

His side was knocked out of Champions League qualifying by Danish side Midtjylland and lost their Scottish Premiership opening game to Hearts. Joe Hart, who has 75 England caps, made ten appearances for Spurs last season after joining in the summer, eight of which came in the Europa League and two in the FA Cup.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper said: “This is a great moment for me in my career, and I am delighted to be joining a club of Celtic’s stature.” McCarthy made ten starts for Crystal Palace last season in an injury-hit campaign before leaving Selhurst Park as a free agent.

Speaking on his signing, he said: “To have signed for Celtic is a brilliant feeling, and this is a special day for my family and me.” He also said: “I know all about the club, the size of it and all the success it’s enjoyed, particularly in recent years.”

Top 5 worst transfers of the year 2021 - Naija News 247

The grass is not always greener. This article by Naija News 247 will focus on the five least successful transfers of the 2021 calendar. Sergio Ramos is the head of this unflattering shortlist.

Top 5 worst transfers of the year 2021
  1. Sergio Ramos (PSG)

Who to save Private Ramos? Six months after his arrival at the end of his contract with great fanfare in Paris, his adventure in the capital has never really started, for the moment, with only 175 minutes of play on the clock. An injury-related ignition delay and possibly an internal misunderstanding about how to “manage” his body. In the meantime, its real level and its sporting added value in the workforce raise questions.

  1. Saul Ñiguez (Chelsea)

The other Madrilenian on this list. Saúl had the courage to leave Atlético, his club of always, to go to the collision. Cap on Chelsea to occupy a more “central” place on the ground (he was tired of his role of “convenience store” in Madrid). Unfortunately, in London, his role is even more peripheral than Atlético. And when he plays, he makes mistakes. It is rumored that Chelsea could cut their loan short in January. Cruel?

  1. Gerson (Marseilles)

SOS Gerson, the flagship recruit of the XXL transfer window of Olympic Marseille is also the least in sight, for the moment. There was a better shot in December, but given the twenty million bricks spent by Marseille, supporters expect more.

  1. Luuk de Jong (FC Barcelona)

Despite himself, summer rookie Luuk de Jong crystallized the frustration and grievance of Barcelona fans. The critics are undoubtedly too harsh, but the many failures of the former Sevillian have given ground to grind to its detractors. In his defense, it is difficult for a rookie to express himself in a context as delicate as Camp Nou at the present time.

  1. Mario Mandzukic (Milan)

Arrived in Milan in January 2021 to compensate for the injury of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mandzukic spent most of his time in the infirmary. Result of the races: ten matches played, no goals on the clock and a retirement at the end of the season. A well-deserved rest in view of his glorious career; we easily forgive him his amorphous six months in Milan.

The greatest right back in Barça history

Dani Alves came to Barça in the summer of 2008 after five brilliant seasons in Sevilla. In the Catalan capital, he made the right back slot his own across eight seasons, making 391 official appearances and scoring 23 goals.

Although his main role has always been in defence, in the true Brazilian wing-back tradition, Alves also likes to join the attack, where he has a fine shot from outside the area, earning him the reputation as one of the finest players of all time in his position. He was an automatic choice under all of Pep Guardiola, Tito Vilanova, Tata Martino and Luis Enrique, and the fans loved his dedication and extroverted character. In the summer of 2016, he left for Juventus, and since then has been at Paris Saint-Germain and lastly, at São Paulo back in his home country.

He also won titles at Juventus (2), Paris Saint-Germain (6) and São Paulo (1) before returning to Catalonia.
