Unclassified since his ouster from Arsenal in November 2019, Unai Emery (48) returned to his English period with the Daily Mail. While waiting to know if a position will become available next season, the Basque technician spoke of his difficulties with the Gunners at the start of the exercise, when the previous one had been encouraging, Xtratao Media Sports News Reports.
According to him, one of the problems was the signing of Nicolas Pépé (despite the 80 M € invested) in place of a player capable of being successful in the English championship, without time to adapt.
“Pepe is a good player, but he needs time. When I was there, he did not give me performances. I was rather in favor of someone who knows more than the whole of the English championship, so that he does not have a period of adaptation” deplored the former coach of PSG, who rather wanted the arrival of Wilfried Zaha.
“He was the player I wanted because he won a lot of games alone. I saw twenty of his games, incredible performances and I told them that he was the player I wanted for the team. I spoke to Zaha. (…) He wanted to come. But the club decided that Pepe was younger, that he was a player of the future. I said yes, but that we needed to win now and that Zaha won games.” he added
