Suleja is one of the 25 local government areas in Niger State Nigeria, which is predominantly occupied by the Hausa tribe. During the 19th century, Suleja was meant to be the Abuja Emirate and it was located in the north- facing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Suleja is considered a mighty local government in Niger state as its landmass is about 2, 980 kilometers per square mile, it was established after the federal capital territory Abuja was founded.
The Suleja emirate council was initially occupied by chiefs from Koro, who paid allegiance to the Zazzau (Zaria) caliphate.
History has it that after the 1804 Jihad Holy war by the Fulani tribe, the warriors overpowered the Zaria Caliphate, and not too far from the Zaria Emirate, King Makau Mohammadu of Zaria and his Junior Brother, the immediate successor to the throne of Zazzau, Jatau (Ja) Abu led many warriors to Koro village in 1828 and thus, Jatau Abu founded Abuja.
Jatau Abu began building a great wall to guard his territory after which he declared himself the first Sarkin of the town Abuja while he was still the Sarkin of Zaria.
Abu Jatau managed to keep Abuja safe from external attacks and through him, there were a lot of trades with the Fulani, and his town Abuja became a dominant Hausa shelter.
Meanwhile, in 1993 Ibrahim Awwal became the new traditional ruler (Emir) or the Sarkin Zaria, of the Suleja Emirate council. His opponents made his regime ungovernable for him as there were lots of conflicts and loss of properties in the town.
On 1994, 10th of May, he was ousted from office by Gen. Sani Abacha the then military President of Nigeria.
However, in the year 2000, on 17th January, Ibrahim Awwal was redeemed to his formal position as the paramount traditional ruler of Suleja, known as the Emir or Sarkin Zaria (Zazzau) after Nigeria retreated to democratic rule.
Although his reimbursement as the Emir of Suleja caused so much unrest again just like the previous time, this propelled the federal government to sanction the anti- conflict soldiers into Suleja and thus imposing almost dusk to dawn movement restrictions in Suleja.
